Artificial intelligence is advancing quickly - and the conversation is increasingly shifting from what AI can do to how it should be secured, governed, and monitored.

A voluntary accord announced by President Donald Trump includes commitments from leaders at several major AI companies to strengthen oversight of advanced AI development. The framework includes internal controls, independent external audits, and board-level review.

For cybersecurity and risk leaders, the announcement raises an important question:

As AI systems become more powerful and more deeply connected to business operations, can governance and accountability keep pace?

The issue extends far beyond the companies developing frontier AI. Organizations across government, defense, healthcare, financial services, critical infrastructure, and other regulated industries are rapidly adopting AI systems of their own.

That means understanding what information AI can access, what actions it can take, how its activity is monitored, and who is accountable when something goes wrong is becoming an essential part of modern risk management.

The technology may be new, but the security fundamentals are familiar:

Establish controls. Test them. Validate them. Monitor continuously. Assign accountability.
